San Andres – Buggy Rental

When we arrived in San Andres, we mainly got around the island via public transport or taxi. In the first couple of days on the island, we noticed several buggies on the streets and also rental spots. We enquired about the buggy in one of the rental spots near Centro and decided to hire one for one of the days we had free. The rental came to 200,000 COP¹ for 1 full day with a full tank.

We picked up the buggy at around 11 AM and headed down to the southern tip of the island. It took us about 45 minutes to drive down the coastline enjoying the great beach views along the way. We stopped at El Hoyo Soplador which is one of the main tourist spots in San Andres. At this place, the parking is free, but the locals ask you to buy a drink or food from the restaurant bar. We ordered one of the local cocktails called Coco Loco which was served in a coconut. There was a long queue when we got there to take a picture at the place. This tourist spot is a natural phenomenon of a blowhole in the rocky ground. When the waves come crashing into the cove, you’ll get a gust of wind and water sprayed out of the blowhole. We waited in the queue for about 10-15 minutes to get a picture/video.

Next, we continued driving along the coastline in a loop around the island. After about 20 minutes, we arrived at a viewpoint on the west side of the island. At this viewpoint, there is the tourist letter sign of I Love San Andres Island. There aren’t as many people at this viewpoint compared to the other letter sign of San Andres in Centro, so it’s easier to get a picture here. After getting a picture we continued driving up the coastline to get to Centro on the north side of the island. It took us about 30 minutes and it was now around 1.30 PM so we went for lunch in Centro.

After lunch, we stopped by the main tourist letters of I Love San Andres in Centro. We then looped back around the island making stops at remote beaches along the way. Most of the west side is quite rocky and mainly used for Scuba diving. The south and east side have untouched sandy beaches with clear water. Since these beaches are more remote, they don’t have crowds like the beaches at Centro and were great to relax in. We finished our loop back to Centro at around 6 PM to drop off the buggy.

San Andres – Semi Submarine

We booked this tour for the afternoon with Ecodivers Tours following our Scuba Experience Tour in the morning. The minibus that picked us up from the dive center dropped us off in Centro and we headed to the tour agency’s office. From here, one of the reps walked us over to the muelle where the semi-submarine boat was located. It was a large boat which was anchored in deeper water, so we first got on a smaller boat which took us to the semi-submarine. The semi-submarine had lots of seating space for about 50 people and lots of shade. We set out at around 3 PM and headed in the direction of Haynes Cay for about 30 minutes.

The boat slowed down near a shallow zone where there was lots of sea life and we were invited to go down to the hull. The hull was full of windows so you could see all the marine life swimming around. The guide pointed out the different species and gave us information on them. Another guide dove into the water to lure fish toward the boat. This part of the tour lasted for about 20 minutes before we headed to another zone for swimming. The boat anchored in and we were free to go for a swim. The current was very strong so not many people got in, but it was a refreshing swim to cool down from the sun. At around 4.30 PM we began making our way back to the pier and finished the tour at 5 PM. It was a quick boat ride into the sea and a good way to explore the sea life without getting wet.

San Andres – Scuba Diving

We had originally planned to do one of the 3-day certification courses, but we ended up backing out because the place we planned to do the course was very unorganized. Also, we went during Covid and they didn’t seem to have adequate cleaning protocols. We didn’t plan on doing scuba diving there again, but whilst in Centro, one of the tour reps convinced us to go with another dive center. We were booked in for a morning half-day Scuba Experience session and we were picked up from our hotel at around 10 AM. After making a couple of other stops, we got to the dive center Sea Pride on the western side of the island at around 10.30 AM. We registered and went to the seating area to wait for other groups to arrive. Once everyone had arrived, one of the instructors began their presentation and demonstrated how to use the equipment. They gave clear instructions on what our role was once in the water and that we would have 1 instructor between 2 people who would operate the equipment.

At around 11.30 AM they started handing out the equipment and made sure the fit was OK for us and that it was all in working order. After everyone had their gear on, we were taken out to the shore to dive into the water. The entry point for us was from a rocky shoreline, and we had to drop into the water on our backs. An instructor checks your equipment one last time before you drop in, and there’s another instructor in the water waiting for you as well. The tank is the heaviest part, but once you drop in, you float right to the top. The instructor then tells you to lie flat and breathe through the regulator. They then turn you to face down into the water for you to get used to breathing through the regulator. Once everyone from your group is in the water and familiar with the regulator, the instructors signal us to swim further into the sea. They adjust the buoyancy as we keep progressing so all we had to do was breathe through the regulator and signal that we were OK. My group set out at around 11.55 AM and the scenery was amazing. We got to see corals, lots of different fish species, and an eel. In all that time in the water, I didn’t notice how deep we had gotten until we were signaled to go back. I managed to get some great shots with my GoPro, but the instructor also took pictures of us which were much better.

Overall it was a great experience that convinced me to take the certification exam on another holiday. The instructors were great and knowledgeable, but sometimes they took a while to adjust my buoyancy which meant that sometimes I was too close to the corals or the seabed. The experience in the water lasted about 30 minutes and we were out of the water by 12.30 PM. We then went back into the dive center to return our gear and get changed. The minivan then arrived at around 1 PM to pick us up. One of the stops it was making was at Centro which was convenient for us since we had another semi-submarine tour scheduled in the afternoon.

San Andres – Caribbean Paradise

At the departure airport, everyone has to purchase a Tourist Card which costs 25 USD² and can be paid in USD or COP³. you must make sure to keep the Tourist Card throughout your stay and present it at the San Andres customs when leaving the island. We arrived at the San Andres Airport at around 4 PM. The airport is quite small so we got through customs quickly. Upon exiting the airport, several taxis are waiting to pick up passengers. Our hotel was located in San Luis on the east side of the island which was a little far away from Centro where the main strip is. We decided to first walk to the main strip to see if we could get a tour for the following day.

The main strip is a short 20-minute walk from the airport, and you can first walk to the beach and walk alongside the sea which is a beautiful walk. Once we got to the main strip, we found a couple of tour agencies and bought an Islands Tour for the next day. We then took a taxi to our hotel which cost us 25,000 COP. We stayed at San Luis Place by Dorado which had a private beach. A perk of the hotel we stayed at is that we also had access to the private beaches and facilities of the other hotels By Dorado. That evening we headed to one of them in the San Luis area Hotel Reina del Mar which had a bar and restaurant.

We spent a week in San Andres which is great for both relaxing and going on tours to explore the island. Many of the hotels have private beaches and we found time every day to chill at the private beaches and pools of the hotels By Dorado. There are also lots of tours and activities available and we headed out on the Islands Tour, a Scuba Diving Experience, a Semi-Submarine tour, rented a golf cart to tour the island, and went to a Boat Party. Overall, it’s a great island destination to experience Caribbean beaches with lots of activities.

Botany Bay – Beautiful Sandy Beach

Es posible llegar a este destino por transporte público, pero primero hay que tomar un tren a Broadstairs o Margate y de ahí tomar un bus a Botany Bay. Saliendo de la terminal de Londres, el viaje es de unas 2 horas y media, más el viaje a la terminal. Es más fácil llegar en carro porque es un viaje más corto de alrededor de 1 hora y 45 minutos si no hay tráfico. Sin embargo, esta playa es bien popular en el verano, entonces es mejor salir en la madrugada para poder encontrar estacionamiento cerca a la playa.

El área de Botany Bay es bien residencial y dependiendo de en donde lograste encontrar estacionamiento, es posible que tengas que caminar un rato por el acantilado para llegar a una de las entradas de la playa. En el camino, podrás apreciar de la vista espectacular de la playa y el mar. Hay un baño y área para cambiarse gratuito en una de las entradas principales, pero no es muy grande y tampoco muy bien mantenido. En la temporada alta de verano, es probable que haya una cola larga.

La playa es pequeña, pero es de arena lo cual es raro en el Reino Unido, y por eso es bien popular. También es un lugar único porque está rodeado por acantilados de tiza blanca. Los acantilados son una gran oportunidad de fotos y también para caminar porque son buenos miradores con una vista magnifica de la playa. Cuando fuimos en septiembre, el clima llegaba a los 30 grados, pero aun así el agua estaba helada. En fin, es una gran playa que queda cerca de Londres para un paseo de 1 día.

Seven Sisters – Scenic White Cliffs

Los pueblos más cercanos a los acantilados son Seaford y Eastbourne. Ambos tienen estaciones de tren con servicio saliendo de Londres y el viaje en tren tarda alrededor de 2 horas. Decidimos ir a Seaford en carro que también es un viaje de 2 horas. El lugar es un sitio turístico muy popular entonces el parqueadero al lado de la playa se sabe llenar bien pronto. Hay varios quioscos en la playa de piedras para comprar snacks, bebidas, y helados. Cuando fuimos hizo un poco de frio, entonces no había mucha gente que se metía al mar porque el agua estaba helada. Hay un camino que va por lo largo de la playa donde también hay unas casetas de colores por lo cual es bonito para caminar.

El camino va al inicio del sendero en Seaford Head West que va hacia los acantilados blancos. El camino de subida al primer acantilado es empinado entonces nos cansamos un poco. El resto del sentero es más facil y plano. No hay barreras en los filos de los acantilados y hay rotulos de advertencia que el suelo en los filos puede ser inestable. Entonces es mejor alejarse del filo y siempre hay que cuidar de los niños. La vista es espectacular a lo largo del sendero, y puedes recoger unas piedras de tiza blanca en el camino.

Seguimos el sendero por alrededor de una hora hasta llegar al mirador de los acantilados blancos de Seven Sisters. Desde este mirador, se puede apreciar una vista panorámica de los acantilados. Se puede continuar hasta llegar a los acantilados de Seven Sisters, pero decidimos regresar a Seaford para tener tiempo para hacer una breve parada en Brighton que está a unos 30 minutos en carro.

Porto – Historic Coastal City

Nuestro vuelo de regreso a Londres salía de Porto en la noche, entonces llegamos a Porto alrededor de las 11.45 AM para explorar la ciudad. Encontramos un parqueadero cerca de la Câmara Municipal do Porto. En esa zona hay una plaza grande con varias cafeterías y restaurantes. Caminamos por el área por un rato y luego nos fuimos a almorzar en Kind Kitchen que tiene unas excelentes opciones veganas.

Después de almorzar, caminamos hacia el río para cruzar el Ponte Luís I. Las calles para llegar ahí son angostas y llenos de edificios coloniales. También entramos un rato a la São Bento Station donde los muros de la entrada son decorados con unos hermosos azulejos de mosaicos. También pasamos por muchas iglesias antiguas y la Cathedral Sé do Porto que está ubicada en la cima de la peña cerca del puente. Se puede cruzar el icónico puente metálico que tiene caminos peatonales en los costados.

Lo interesante de este puente es que solo pasa una línea de trole sobre él en vez de vehículos por lo cual es genial para caminar. El puente es bien alto y tiene una gran vista del río y la ciudad. Nos tardamos unos 10 minutos en cruzar el puente y al otro lado, hay un teleférico que baja a un malecón del río. Los boletos cuestan 6 EUR para un tramo y 9 EUR de ida y vuelta que es un poco caro entonces decidimos regresarnos. En el retorno, tomamos un pequeño desvío por el Jardim Marques de Oliveira y descansamos un rato en una cafetería de la zona. Luego regresamos al parqueadero para ir al aeropuerto para tomar nuestro vuelo de regreso a Londres.

Lisboa – City Sites and the Beach

Saliendo de Canas de Senhorim, es un viaje de 2 horas y 40 minutos y la ruta que va por las montañas y valles es muy bonita. Las autopistas son buenas y al llegar a la ciudad, las calles son angostas y empinadas. Nuestro carro alquilado tenía transmisión automática por lo cual se nos hizo más fácil manejar por la ciudad. Encontramos un parqueadero cerca a Castelo de São Jorge y de ahí caminamos a la Praça da Figueira para desayunar. Encontramos un buen restaurante que tiene un sabroso menú vegano.

Después de desayunar, subimos la cuesta a Castelo de São Jorgey nos hicimos unos 30 minutos caminando. Pasamos por caminos adoquinados y vimos que varios muros de los edificios estaban decorados con los icónicos azulejos de mosaico. El complejo del castillo bien grande y caminamos por el perímetro de sus paredes. No entramos al castillo porque decidimos ir a un mirador. Nos hicimos unos 25 minutos caminando al Miradouro da Graça. Este lugar es genial y se tiene una vista panorámica despejada de la ciudad y el icónico puente colgante Ponte 25 de Abril. Hay varias sillas y mesas con parasoles aquí para descansar un rato y se puede pedir bebidas y snacks. Nos quedamos aquí por unos 30 minutos y de ahí nos fuimos de regreso al parqueadero. Por el camino de regreso llegamos a la parte superior del parqueadero y descubrimos que hay una terraza que también es un buen mirador de la ciudad. Llegamos por la 1.30 PM y empezamos nuestro viaje a la playa en Sesimbra.

Nos hicimos un viaje de alrededor de 11 hora con un poco de trafico al salir de la ciudad. La ruta que entra a la playa es de un punto alto y se puede ver la playa mientras se baja por la calle sinuosa. Encontramos un parqueadero a unos pocos minutos caminando de la playa. Hay varios bares a lo largo de la playa y tienen varios puestos privados con parasoles que se puede arrendar. También hay varios lugares públicos donde te puedes instalar con tu propio parasol. La playa es de arena y es bien larga. A los lados extremos de la playa, hay unas peñas y el lugar es muy bonito. Pasamos unas 3 horas relajándonos en la playa antes de regresar a Lisboa para merendar.

En el camino de regreso, hubo mucho más tráfico, especialmente en el cruce del puente y nos hicimos 1 hora y 30 minutos de viaje. Hicimos una parada en la Torre de Belém antes de ir a merendar en la ciudad. El malecón que va por el río es muy bonito para caminar, especialmente en la hora de la puesta del sol. De aquí se tiene una buena vista del puente colgante y el Santuário de Cristo Rei . Nos fuimos a merendar por las 7.30 PM y de ahí nos fuimos de regreso a Canas de Senhorim.

San Jacinto – Relaxing Beaches

Saliendo desde la Capital Quito, se demora unas 6 horas 30 minutos por el camino sinuoso que desciende los Andes. Salimos por las 6 AM e hicimos una parada en Santo Domingo de Los Tsachilas para desayunar ahí por las 8.30 AM. De ahí continuamos otras 2 horas y 30 minutos a Chone donde tomamos un breve descanso por el medio día. Luego seguimos viajando 1 hora y 15 minutos y llegamos a San Jacinto por la 1.30 PM. El pueblo es bien pequeño y se une con San Clemente. Nosotros nos quedamos en una villa en una salida de la autopista a 2 cuadras de la playa. La marea estuvo alta en la tarde con olas violentas chocando la orilla entonces no se pudo entrar al mar. Pero de todos modos la puesta del sol sobre el mar estuvo hermosa.

El día siguiente nos fuimos a la playa de San Jacinto donde están unas letras coloridas con el nombre del pueblo. La marea estuvo baja en la mañana con olas más leves entonces si había como bañarse en el mar. Unos amigos de un familiar viven por ahí y nos llevó a una playa más al sur cerca de Crucita. Esta playa estaba en la boca de un rio y había como bañarse en el rio también. Ahí también había un manglar protegido con un sendero. Un cuidador nos llevó por el sendero y nos dio información sobre la flora y fauna del área. La entrada es gratis, pero venden pulseras para apoyar a la conservación del manglar. En la playa hay varias aves especialmente grullas. También puedes ver unos cangrejos que salen de unos pequeños huecos.

Por las 4 PM fuimos a almorzar en el Hotel San Jacinto. Ahí tienen mariscos frescos y mesas afuera frente al mar. También hay un mirador con vista al mar que se puede subir. Las olas rompen en las rocas de la orilla y puede que te mojes cuando viene una ola grande. Después de comer, fuimos a Bahia de Caráquez que queda a unos 40 minutos en carro. En esta ciudad hay un puente grande que cruza a San Vicente. Cruzamos el puente en el carro y paramos en el Malecón de San Vicente. Ahí hay un muelle con vista de Bahía de Caráquez. Ahí nos quedamos para ver la puesta del sol y luego regresamos a nuestra villa.

El ultimo día nos fuimos a la playa en Crucita que queda al sur de San Jacinto a unos 20 minutos en carro. Esta playa es más turística y desayunamos en unos de los restaurantes frente a la playa. Después del desayuno, nos fuimos a caminar por la playa antes de comenzar el viaje de regreso a Quito.

Nusa Penida – Scenic Island Beaches

Reservamos este tour cuando estábamos en Kuta por 800,000 IDR³. La buseta no recogió de nuestro hotel alrededor de las 7.30 AM y nos hicimos unos 30 minutos a la Playa de Sanur. Ahí nos dieron nuestros boletos para el bote y luego tuvimos unos 15 minutos para caminar por la playa. A estas horas de la mañana no había mucha gente en la playa, pero si había unas tiendas abiertas. El viaje a Nusa Penida en bote se demora 1 hora y llegamos por las 9.15 AM. El bote llega a la parte norte de la isla en Toyapakeh. Hay varios guías aquí que están atentos para recoger a los turistas que reservaron tours. Cuando ven tu recibo del tour, te llevan a la buseta con el resto del grupo. Primero fuimos al mirador de la Playa de Kelingking. Esta playa queda en el sur oeste de la isla y nos hicimos unos 50 minutos llegando a las 10.15 AM. La isla es montañosa y las carreteras son angostas y sinuosas. El mirado queda en unas peñas con una hermosa vista de la playa y una península que sale hacia el mar. Solo pasamos unos 15 minutos aquí para tomar fotos entonces no tuvimos tiempo para bajar a la playa por el sendero.

Nuestra próxima parada es Angel’s Billabong que queda a unos 30 minutos y llegamos por las 11 AM. Este lugar es una piscina infinita natural con vista al mar. Sin embargo, es prohibido bañarse en esta piscina entonces solo hay como tomar fotos del lugar. Había mucha gente aquí y nos quedamos unos 10 minutos para tomar fotos. De ahí caminamos unos 5 minutos por un sendero para llegar a la playa de Broken Beach (Playa Rota) . Este lugar es una ensenada donde un arco en las peñas deja pasar agua que forma una piscina. Tuvimos unos 30 minutos para caminar por el perímetro antes de regresar a la buseta.

Por el medio día, continuamos a nuestra última parada de Crystal Bay (Bahía de Cristal) y en el camino paramaos en un restaurante turístico para almorzar. Acabamos con el almuerzo por la 1.15 PM y llegamos a Crystal Bay (Bahía de Crystal) por la 1.30 PM. Esta playa es bien popular y está llena de sillas de playa con parasoles y varios restaurantes/bares. El guía nos dio el equipo de snorkel y nos dijo que no teníamos que ir muy lejos para ver la vida marina. Entramos al mar y es poco profundo por unos 20 metros. Hay bastantes corales y rocas al entrar al agua entonces sería bueno si usas zapatos para el agua. El sitio es muy bueno para hacer snorkel y vimos algunos peces, corales, y otros animales marítimos. Nos quedamos unas 2 horas y 30 minutos en Crystal Bay (Bahía de Cristal) y la mayor parte de ese tiempo pasamos haciendo snorkel. También nos tomamos unas cervezas heladas y nos sentamos en unas bancas en la sombra disfrutando de la vista del mar.

Por las 4 PM, nos fuimos de regreso al puerto que estaba a unos 30 minutos en la buseta. Nos subimos al bote y llegamos a la playa de Sanur por las 5.30 PM. Ahí esperamos a nuestra buseta que nos llevaba de regreso al hotel, pero llego tarde por las 5.50 PM. En el camino al hotel nos cogió la hora pico y llegamos al hotel por las 6.30 PM.
