San Andres – Buggy Rental

When we arrived in San Andres, we mainly got around the island via public transport or taxi. In the first couple of days on the island, we noticed several buggies on the streets and also rental spots. We enquired about the buggy in one of the rental spots near Centro and decided to hire one for one of the days we had free. The rental came to 200,000 COP¹ for 1 full day with a full tank.

We picked up the buggy at around 11 AM and headed down to the southern tip of the island. It took us about 45 minutes to drive down the coastline enjoying the great beach views along the way. We stopped at El Hoyo Soplador which is one of the main tourist spots in San Andres. At this place, the parking is free, but the locals ask you to buy a drink or food from the restaurant bar. We ordered one of the local cocktails called Coco Loco which was served in a coconut. There was a long queue when we got there to take a picture at the place. This tourist spot is a natural phenomenon of a blowhole in the rocky ground. When the waves come crashing into the cove, you’ll get a gust of wind and water sprayed out of the blowhole. We waited in the queue for about 10-15 minutes to get a picture/video.

Next, we continued driving along the coastline in a loop around the island. After about 20 minutes, we arrived at a viewpoint on the west side of the island. At this viewpoint, there is the tourist letter sign of I Love San Andres Island. There aren’t as many people at this viewpoint compared to the other letter sign of San Andres in Centro, so it’s easier to get a picture here. After getting a picture we continued driving up the coastline to get to Centro on the north side of the island. It took us about 30 minutes and it was now around 1.30 PM so we went for lunch in Centro.

After lunch, we stopped by the main tourist letters of I Love San Andres in Centro. We then looped back around the island making stops at remote beaches along the way. Most of the west side is quite rocky and mainly used for Scuba diving. The south and east side have untouched sandy beaches with clear water. Since these beaches are more remote, they don’t have crowds like the beaches at Centro and were great to relax in. We finished our loop back to Centro at around 6 PM to drop off the buggy.

San Andres – Semi Submarine

We booked this tour for the afternoon with Ecodivers Tours following our Scuba Experience Tour in the morning. The minibus that picked us up from the dive center dropped us off in Centro and we headed to the tour agency’s office. From here, one of the reps walked us over to the muelle where the semi-submarine boat was located. It was a large boat which was anchored in deeper water, so we first got on a smaller boat which took us to the semi-submarine. The semi-submarine had lots of seating space for about 50 people and lots of shade. We set out at around 3 PM and headed in the direction of Haynes Cay for about 30 minutes.

The boat slowed down near a shallow zone where there was lots of sea life and we were invited to go down to the hull. The hull was full of windows so you could see all the marine life swimming around. The guide pointed out the different species and gave us information on them. Another guide dove into the water to lure fish toward the boat. This part of the tour lasted for about 20 minutes before we headed to another zone for swimming. The boat anchored in and we were free to go for a swim. The current was very strong so not many people got in, but it was a refreshing swim to cool down from the sun. At around 4.30 PM we began making our way back to the pier and finished the tour at 5 PM. It was a quick boat ride into the sea and a good way to explore the sea life without getting wet.

San Andres – Scuba Diving

We had originally planned to do one of the 3-day certification courses, but we ended up backing out because the place we planned to do the course was very unorganized. Also, we went during Covid and they didn’t seem to have adequate cleaning protocols. We didn’t plan on doing scuba diving there again, but whilst in Centro, one of the tour reps convinced us to go with another dive center. We were booked in for a morning half-day Scuba Experience session and we were picked up from our hotel at around 10 AM. After making a couple of other stops, we got to the dive center Sea Pride on the western side of the island at around 10.30 AM. We registered and went to the seating area to wait for other groups to arrive. Once everyone had arrived, one of the instructors began their presentation and demonstrated how to use the equipment. They gave clear instructions on what our role was once in the water and that we would have 1 instructor between 2 people who would operate the equipment.

At around 11.30 AM they started handing out the equipment and made sure the fit was OK for us and that it was all in working order. After everyone had their gear on, we were taken out to the shore to dive into the water. The entry point for us was from a rocky shoreline, and we had to drop into the water on our backs. An instructor checks your equipment one last time before you drop in, and there’s another instructor in the water waiting for you as well. The tank is the heaviest part, but once you drop in, you float right to the top. The instructor then tells you to lie flat and breathe through the regulator. They then turn you to face down into the water for you to get used to breathing through the regulator. Once everyone from your group is in the water and familiar with the regulator, the instructors signal us to swim further into the sea. They adjust the buoyancy as we keep progressing so all we had to do was breathe through the regulator and signal that we were OK. My group set out at around 11.55 AM and the scenery was amazing. We got to see corals, lots of different fish species, and an eel. In all that time in the water, I didn’t notice how deep we had gotten until we were signaled to go back. I managed to get some great shots with my GoPro, but the instructor also took pictures of us which were much better.

Overall it was a great experience that convinced me to take the certification exam on another holiday. The instructors were great and knowledgeable, but sometimes they took a while to adjust my buoyancy which meant that sometimes I was too close to the corals or the seabed. The experience in the water lasted about 30 minutes and we were out of the water by 12.30 PM. We then went back into the dive center to return our gear and get changed. The minivan then arrived at around 1 PM to pick us up. One of the stops it was making was at Centro which was convenient for us since we had another semi-submarine tour scheduled in the afternoon.

San Andres – Islands Tour

This was the first tour we purchased when we arrived at the island. There are several tour reps walking along the main strip in Centro advertising tours. Usually, for any tours involving boats, it’s normally cheapest to buy tickets at the pier from where they depart. The tour that we bought was scheduled to depart at 8.30 AM from a muelle on the south side of Centro. There are several entrances and we were unsure what entrance to go through, but when we showed our voucher we were pointed in the right direction. We arrived at the pier at around 8.20 AM and they took our voucher to register our arrival. They told us to wait to be called to be given a wristband. After about 20 minutes of waiting we went up to ask them again and they said they were delayed so we had to wait a bit more. At around 9 AM they gave us our wristbands and told us to board one of the boats. We began setting out before one of the crew members said we were on the wrong boat and so we had to go back to the pier to change to another boat. The whole thing was very unorganized and we finally made it on the right boat at around 9.30 AM.

Johnny Cay

The tour we got was for one of the fast boats and it fit around 20 people. Our first stop was the island of Johnny Cay which is a short 15-minute journey away. The arrival to the island is very beautiful as you can see the palm-tree-lined sandy shore surrounded by the colorful turquoise water. We were left to roam the island and asked to be back at the boat at 12.30 PM to continue onto the next island. The island is very small so we decided to walk the perimeter which took us about 30 minutes. The center of the island has a couple of facilities and some seating areas in the shade of tall palm trees. You can also buy some food and drinks in this area. You can get in the water on some shallow parts of the island, but be careful because the waves can be very strong. Overall, it’s a nice place to relax during the day.

Aquarium

The boat came back on time and we promptly set out to the next destination which was the Aquarium. It takes about 35 minutes to get there and on the way the tour guide asks everyone if they want to make a stop by the ghost ship. However, they ask for an additional 5000 COP¹ contribution per person which was a little annoying, but fortunately, everyone on the boat agreed. The tour guide tells the story of how the cargo ship got stuck on the corals and was abandoned since it was too expensive to pull it out. It was a quick stop and then we continued to our destination which is known as the aquarium. The water is much calmer here so it’s perfect for snorkeling. There are several stalls there and you can rent snorkeling gear if you didn’t bring any with you. However, the highlight of this place is the sandy path that goes into the sea. The waves come in ankle-deep at most, but it’s a very picturesque walk.

Haynes Cay

There is also a safety line that connects to Haynes Cay that you can walk along. The water is waist deep and it takes about 10 minutes to walk across. This island is smaller than Johnny Cay and also less maintained. There’s a restaurant here as well to buy food and drinks which is the main attraction, but most people stay in the Aquarium. We walked back across and relaxed in the water while we waited for the boat to come back at 3 PM. We then got on the boat and one of the sting ray handlers brought a sting ray by the boat. We saw it swimming around the boat and you could reach out to touch it as it swam by.

Manglar

Next, the tour guide took us to the final destination which was the mangroves. We cruised around here for a couple of minutes while the guide told us about the flora and fauna in the area. Then it was a quick 10-minute journey back to the pier.

San Andres – Caribbean Paradise

At the departure airport, everyone has to purchase a Tourist Card which costs 25 USD² and can be paid in USD or COP³. you must make sure to keep the Tourist Card throughout your stay and present it at the San Andres customs when leaving the island. We arrived at the San Andres Airport at around 4 PM. The airport is quite small so we got through customs quickly. Upon exiting the airport, several taxis are waiting to pick up passengers. Our hotel was located in San Luis on the east side of the island which was a little far away from Centro where the main strip is. We decided to first walk to the main strip to see if we could get a tour for the following day.

The main strip is a short 20-minute walk from the airport, and you can first walk to the beach and walk alongside the sea which is a beautiful walk. Once we got to the main strip, we found a couple of tour agencies and bought an Islands Tour for the next day. We then took a taxi to our hotel which cost us 25,000 COP. We stayed at San Luis Place by Dorado which had a private beach. A perk of the hotel we stayed at is that we also had access to the private beaches and facilities of the other hotels By Dorado. That evening we headed to one of them in the San Luis area Hotel Reina del Mar which had a bar and restaurant.

We spent a week in San Andres which is great for both relaxing and going on tours to explore the island. Many of the hotels have private beaches and we found time every day to chill at the private beaches and pools of the hotels By Dorado. There are also lots of tours and activities available and we headed out on the Islands Tour, a Scuba Diving Experience, a Semi-Submarine tour, rented a golf cart to tour the island, and went to a Boat Party. Overall, it’s a great island destination to experience Caribbean beaches with lots of activities.

Cunuyacu – Waterfall and Hot Spring

Ubicado en las faldas de las montañas volcánicas gemelas Los Ilinizas, la cascada y termas de Cunuyacu están a unas 2 horas en carro saliendo desde Quito. Estos destinos son poco conocidos para turismo y un poco apartado de las calles principales. Para llegar, primero hay que llegar a la Reserva Ecológica que se puede entrar por una calle de tierra en San Juan de Pastocalle después de salir de la carretera Panamericana. Hay un letrero turístico grande a la entrada de la calle que no te lo puedes perder. El día anterior había llovido entonces la calle estaba un poco enlodada. Fuimos en un carro grande tipo SUV y logramos atravesar la mayor parte sin problemas. Solo hubo una parte donde había una roca grande donde los pasajeros nos bajamos para que puede subir el carro.

Llegamos al parqueadero alrededor de las 7.30 AM, y aunque podíamos seguir por la calle, decidimos dejar los carros ahí porque la calle no mejoraba. De ahí empezamos la caminata, y después de unos minutos, llegamos a la entrada que tenia un rotulo de bienvenido. Aquí la calle estaba cerra para los vehículos. También hay una casa aquí y yo había leído anteriormente que hay alguien que vive en la zona quien ofrece transporte. Sin embargo llegamos bien temprano y parecía que nadie estaba ahí, entonces cruzamos la barrera y continuamos la caminata. A partir de este punto, la calle empeoro y había huecos grandes y rocas. Solo un vehículo tipo 4x4 hubiese podido subir, pero para una caminata, la calle estuvo bien. Tardamos alrededor de 1 hora en llegar a un mirador donde empieza el sendero.

El sendero primero baja al río donde hay un pequeño puente de madera. El camino estaba bien enlodado entonces hay que bajar con cuidado porque hay partes que son bien resbalosas. Después de cruzar el puente, el sendero se divide en 2 donde una ruta va a la cascada y la otra va a las termas. El sendero esta bien señalizado entonces es fácil seguir las rutas sin perderte. Primero seguimos la ruta para la cascada y llegamos en unos 10 minutos. La cascada no es muy grande, pero lo que resalta es su color rojo/naranja. El color es debido a los minerales volcánicos que han pintado las rocas de color rojo. El color del agua es cristalina y no tiene el mal olor que normalmente producen los minerales volcánicos. Logramos acercarnos a la cascada para tomar unas gran fotos. Para acercarte a la cascada hay que cruzar el riachuelo donde hay unas rocas resbalosas. Es buena idea llevar zapatos o botas de agua pero no necesario. Fuimos las únicas personas en la cascada y tampoco nos cruzamos con otros grupos. Pasamos unos 20 minutos tomando fotos antes de continuar a las termas.

Primero regresamos por el sendero hasta regresar al puente de madera. De ahí seguimos la otra ruta señalizada para llegar a las termas. En el camino pasamos por un bosque místico de arboles Polylepis. En Ecuador se les conoce como el Árbol de Papel debido a su apariencia de que se esta pelando como hojas de papel. Este sendero es un poco más largo y llegamos a las termas después de unos 20 minutos. Una vez más fuimos las únicas personas ahí y teníamos todos el lugar para nosotros. Las termas es solo una pequeña piscina natural donde han puesto sacos de arena para contener el agua. La temperatura del agua es tibia, no caliente, pero es más refrescante después de la caminata. Aquí si se puede oler los minerales, pero el olor no es muy fuerte y es soportable. Lo destacado de este lugar es la vista porque la piscina es como un balcón en la montaña con la vista del paisaje. Mientras estuvimos ahí estaba nublado entonces no pudimos ver mucho del paisaje, pero fue un buen lugar para relajarse. Nos quedamos aquí alrededor de una hora cuando empezó a chispear, entonces decidimos bajar antes de que caiga un aguacero.

Fue una experiencia increíble abundante de naturaleza y espectacular para un viaje de un día desde la capital. La caminata en si fue ligera y solo un poco agotador debido a la altura de más de 4000 metros. Si vas un poco mas tarde en el día, el servicio de transporte te ahorraría la caminata de 1 hora inicial. También fue bueno tener el lugar entero para nuestro grupo sin tener que lidiar con multitudes de turistas.

Mindo – Nature and Adventure

A tan solo 2 horas de Quito, este sitio es destino turístico popular para los Quiteños. Nosotros fuimos en carro pero también se puede ir en bus. El pueblo es pequeño pero hay varias agencias turísticas y restaurantes. Yo he ido en algunas ocasiones y normalmente paramos en una agencia en la calle principal para buscar actividades. Hay muchas cosas para hacer y aquí les dejo con unas de las actividades que he hecho en mis últimas visitas.

Zip-lining/Canopy

Hay algunos lugares donde se puede hacer canopy en el bosque nublado entre las montañas. Se puede comprar los tours en el pueblo y normalmente venden paquetes con varias actividades. Sin embargo, también se puede ir directo a los lugares de canopy donde probablemente te resulta más barato. Saliendo desde el pueblo, son unos 15 minutos en carro para llegar al lugar. Al salir del pueblo, la ruta es más angosta y de tierra. En el sitio del canopy había un amplio parqueadero. Los empleados nos ayudaron a ponernos el equipo y luego salimos con 2 guías. Nos demoramos alrededor de 1 hora en completar el circuito de 10 líneas de canopy y fue bien divertido.

Tubing En Aguas Bravas

Esta actividad es mas extrema porque se baja en unas boyas en la corriente fuerte del río. La agencia turística nos dio salva vidas y cascos que nos pusimos antes de salir al río. También nos dijeron que nos pongamos ternos de baño o ropa para mojarnos, porque nos garantizaban que nos íbamos a estilar. Después de cambiarnos, nos subimos a la camioneta para ir al río. Nos hicimos unos 20 minutos y también llevaron las boyas en otras camionetas. El guía nos dio una charla de seguridad y como estábamos en un grupo grande, nos dividieron en 2. Las boyas están amarradas para que alcancen 6 personas más el guía. Comparado al rafting donde hay que remar, tu única obligación en el tubing es agarrarte fuerte de las sogas. El guía hace todo el trabajo de navegar el río que es impresionante ver su habilidad. Lo veras saltando por las boyas y el río para empujar cuando nos quedamos atascados en las rocas. Nos demoramos unos 20 minutos en bajar el río y todos terminamos estilados. Después de salir del río, la camioneta ya estaba esperando para llevarnos de regreso. Nos hicimos solo unos 5 minutos de regreso desde esta parte del río.

Rapelling En Una Cascada

Para esta actividad, nos subimos en las camionetas para ir al bosque nublado. La cascada está ubicada bien metido en el bosque y nos demoramos unos 30-40 minutos en llegar. Primero llegamos a un alojamiento donde esperamos que llegue el guía con el anterior grupo. Luego empezamos una corta caminata y llegamos a la cascada en unos 15 minutos. Cuando llegamos habían unas personas de otro grupo que estaban bajando la cascada en el rappel. Primero llegamos a la base de la cascada y si se le veía alta, tal vez unos 15-20 metros. No había mucha agua entonces era apto para hacer rappelling. Cuando bajaron todos los del grupo anterior, los guías nos pusieron los arneses antes de subir al tope de la cascada. Es una caminata corta de unos 5 minutos y luego el guía nos dio las instrucciones de como bajar en el rappel. Al inicio es un poco miedoso porque hay que reclinarse, pero ya cuando se le atina la técnica se pierde el miedo. En general las personas bajan en unos 5-10 minutos, dependiendo el paso al que bajes. El guía bajo ultimo en unos 10 segundos que fue una locura.

Hay muchas otras actividades que incluyen senderos para visitar las cascadas, alquiler de carritos, una visita al santuario de mariposas, y mucho más. También puedes simplemente ir al río. La corriente es un poco fuerte, pero hay partes que son poco profundo entonces te puedes sentar en unas rocas para recibir un hidromasaje.

Otavalo & Peguche – Culture & Nature

El pueblo turístico popular de Otavalo está a tan solo 2 horas en carro saliendo desde Quito. La ruta es bien transitada entonces hay transporte público que sale con frecuencia de la Terminal Norte de Carcelén. La ruta pasa por las montañas andinas donde se puede apreciar la vista; especialmente cuando se pasa por el lago San Pablo que está ubicado al lado del gran volcán Imbabura.

Primero llegamos al Parque Simón Bolívar que es una pequeña plaza central. Hay varios lugares en esa zona con parqueaderos pagados y después de dejar el carro, empezamos a caminar hacia el mercado artesanal. La mayoría de la gente de Otavalo son de origen indígena y se han integrado a la sociedad moderna. Podrás ver varias personas caminando por el pueblo en trajes típicos, y la atracción principal del pueblo es el mercado artesanal. El mercado artesanal está a tan solo un par de bloques del parque central donde dejamos el carro, y en el camino ya había varios puestos artesanales en las veredas. Algunas calles estaban cerradas al transito vehicular entonces el camino al mercado es más seguro. Los días mas transitados son los del fin de semana y ahí es cuando todo está abierto. El mercado todavía abre entre semana entonces aun vale la pena visitarlo. Podrás encontrar varios productos en Otavalo que son conocidos por su alta calidad en textiles; especialmente los ponchos. También hay muchos restaurantes en el área para probar los platos típicos de la región.

Después de caminar por el mercado, puedes dirigirte a la cascada cercana de Peguche. Está ubicada a tan solo 10 minutos en carro del mercado y hay un parqueadero en el sitio. También hay transporte publico que sale del parque central. Otra opción es tomar un taxi en el pueblo que cuesta unos 2 USD¹ por cada tramo. La última opción es una caminata de 40 minutos porque no queda muy lejos y el pueblo es bonito para caminar. Entre el parqueadero y la entrada, hay varias tiendas y puestos que venden snacks, bebidas, y recuerdos. También hay una estructura de un calendario solar de los Inca que es gratuito.

El boleto de entrada a la cascada cuesta tan solo 0.50 USD con acceso a todos los senderos y espacios en el camino. De ahí es una corta caminata de 10-15 minutos por el sendero que está bien mantenido. El área es bastante verde como un selva y hay varios caminos. Hay servicios higiénicos y también pasamos por una área de camping. Mas allá en el camino había otro sendero que bajaba a una piscina natural. También había unos pequeños puentes que cruzan el rio a una área con cabañas. De lejos esta cabañas parecían restaurantes porque estaban tocando música, aunque también podrían ser hosterías. Llegando a la cascada, el sendero se divide con el camino inferior yendo a la base de la cascada y el camino superior yendo a un mirador. Primero fuimos a la base de la cascada y cruzamos un puente para llegar ahí. La cascada no es muy alta pero el agua cae con bastante potencia para crear un viento de agua. Es posible acercarse a la cascada pero debes estar preparado para estilarte. Yo logre treparme en una roca grande para la foto. El agua es un poco fría pero soportable con el clima calienta que hizo ese día. Luego nos regresamos por el puente y subimos por el otro sendero al mirador de la cascada. Hay una pequeña estructura con una vista de la cascada.

Empezando el camino de regreso, vimos otro sendero que sube el otro lado de la colina. Seguimos este sendero y este camino sube más alto que el del mirador. Llegamos a un punto donde había un rotulo de advertencia y continuamos hacia el tope. Pasando este punto, el sendero es bien angosto y puede ser miedoso si tienes temor a las alturas. Este sendero llega más alto que la cascada y se llega a tener una gran vista del pueblo con el fondo montañoso. Descansamos aquí un rato antes de regresar al parqueadero.

Mojanda Cajas – Andean Lakes

Para visitar a las lagunas de Mojanda Cajas es necesario un poco de preparación porque hay varias rutas. La ruta principal es un camino que inicia en Otavalo. Esta ruta es una calle empedrada que llega a la laguna principal, entonces se puede llegar por aquí en casi todo tipo de vehículo. Si inicias tu viaje en Otavalo, entonces esta es la mejor opción, pero si inicias tu viaje en Quito, esta ruta te suma unos 30-40 minutos a tu viaje total. La ruta alternativa es una calle de tierra que empieza en Tabacundo. Como el camino es de tierra, no les recomiendo ir en vehículos pequeños y si ha estado lloviendo, solo los carros 4x4 lograran subir. Entonces si planean ir desde Quito, asegúrense de revisar el clima.

Como este lugar es medio lejano, no hay transporte público que va a la laguna. Entonces primer hay que tomar transporte público a Otavalo o Tabacundo y luego buscar un servicio de taxi or camioneta. Al reservar el transporte, deben llegar a un acuerdo de tiempo de espera antes de regresar o una hora para que le vayan a recoger si planean quedarse un buen tiempo. Si no, es una caminata larga de regreso porque son kilómetros de áreas que no han sido habitadas.

Nosotros fuimos por la ruta de Tabacundo y nos hicimos alrededor de una hora para llegar a Tabacundo desde Quito. Saliendo de Tabacundo, nos hicimos otra hora por el camino de tierra para llegar a las lagunas. No había llovido antes de que fuéramos, pero había ciertas partes que estaban bien enlodadas. Fuimos en un carro tipo SUV y solo hubo una parte que no pudimos subir sin que los pasajeros se bajen del carro. En el camino, se puede apreciar del paisaje magnifico de las montañas rocosas y los valles verdes. Llegando al final del camino, logramos ver a la laguna en la distancia. Llegamos a un mirador donde nos bajamos a tomar unas fotos. Luego continuamos unos 15 minutos más para bajar al parqueadero al lado de la laguna.

Al lado del parqueadero hay un área pequeña con cabañas que se pueden arrendar y un pequeño jardín. Nosotros llegamos alrededor de las 9 AM y no había nadie entonces teníamos toda la laguna para nosotros. Al final del jardín, hay un pequeño muelle donde se puede tomar unas fotos espectaculares. El día que fuimos estaba nublado, entonces el color del agua estaba oscuro. Sin embargo, el sol salió un rato y ahí se aclaró el color del agua. Sin importar el clima, el paisaje del alrededor es verdaderamente impresionante. Es posible meterse a la laguna, pero el agua es helada. Logramos entrar has que el agua nos llegue a las rodillas por unos segundos antes de salir corriendo. Nos quedamos en la laguna por unos 30 minutos porque se puso nublado de nuevo, y decidimos bajar por si acaso empiece a llover. Si el clima hubiese estado mejor o si nos quedábamos a acampar, vimos un mapa del sitio con varios senderos para hacer caminatas.

Windsor Castle – Historic Royal Home

Conocido como una residencia popular de los monarcas actuales, Windsor Castle es un complejo grande que está abierto al público.
